Interestingly enough, two innocuous prunes claim to be accepted as one of the secret weapons of World War II period. Spink, an auction house in London, is selling two graying prunes that it claims were chosen to be stuffed with documents or other maps to be passed on to prisoners of war secretly. As part of the memorabilia sheltered by a British spy the prunes had been preserved. According to Emily Jackson, the Spink spokeswoman, the prunes are extremely dry and hard and it is really astonishing that they have survived. The late Doreen Mulot, a previous member of Special Operations Executive of Britain, which was started to steer operations behind enemy lines, had collected World War II memorabilia...

Is there a mystery here to be unravelled? Is there a serpent code being held by the Grail myths? Can we uncover this code by taking a look at the Lady of Lake? The answer is yes to all these questions, for held within the folds of the coiled snake we shall discover the truth of the origin of the Arthurian tales and the strange watery Lady who was to give Arthur his sword. There are various names attributed to the 'Lady of the Lake;' Nimue and Vivienne are the two most used, but most pertinent to us here is 'White Serpent.' Nimue is probably Mneme or Mnemosyne, who is one of the Muses or 'water nymphs' from Roman and Greek mythology and who gave out weapons - just as the Lady of the Lake did. Vivienne...

There is a fine line between a toy and a game. If you don't think so, look inside the mind of a child and inside the following article. It may just change how you think about what exactly is a toy. What's the difference? To a little kid, probably not much. And with games that you only need one person to play, such as solitaire, the distinction can be a very fine one. How many of us have heard our mothers yell at us to "put our toys away" and what's in front of use is a chess set that we used to play war with. Kids have wild imaginations. Has that chess set just become a toy?In most cases there is a very big difference between what is a toy and what is a game, at least according to our adult...

The first proofs of the existence of samurai swords in Japan date from 240 BC, during the Yayoi period, when the queen Himeko sent a tribute to the Chinese dynasty Wei, two swords. In the same time, in 280 BC, they imported numerous iron swords from China. It is supposed that the art of forging the steel came immediately after that from China, through Korea, but the details are still unknown. In the 5th century the first samurai swords appeared on a major scale. They were straight and they were called chokuto. The method of hardening the steel, very specific in Japan, as far as the manufacturing of the swords is concerned, was used for the first time in the 6th century. The period of the straight...

The gun is the chosen weapon of modern times. Technologically advanced and deadly accurate, the weapon does its job. Despite its effectiveness, the gun lacks the mystique that accompanies a Japanese sword, or any sword of ancient tradition for that matter. Individual works of art, the swords of Japan have a rich and enduring history. What makes Japanese swords so alluring? Perhaps it's their rich history, or maybe it's the incredible craftsmanship and artistic touches that went into many a sword. Even still, it could be that these swords were often considered an extension of the people who wielded them. More than just an object, they were a constant and unyielding companion in a world very different...

Greco-Roman Religion in both Greece and Rome was polytheistic, embracing a multitude of gods and goddesses, especially in the Roman Empire which tended to absorb the deities of the countries it conquered. The Greco-Roman period of history refers to the culture of the peoples who were incorporated into the Roman Republic and Empire. The "classical" Greco-Roman period ends with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. However, the Greco-Roman civilization continued in the East for another millennium (although as with all civilizations it changed over time). Terms such as Greco-Roman World are also coined by scholars to denote the geographical borders of the culture's impact...

There are some differences between the English and the Continental porcelain. They are different in their designs, styles and their paintings, printings and impressions. We will be looking at some these differences below. CONTINENTAL porcelain differs essentially from English in that it was in nearly every instance, either at first or eventually, hard-paste. Even those factories that began with pseudo-glass soft-paste turned in the end to true hard porcelain. Marks are much more frequent than on English pieces, but have to be treated with suspicion as they stayed in use over long periods and were copied freely. The supremacy of Dresden induced many makers, on the Continent as well as in England, to...

The origins of the Tarot are surrounded with myth and lore. It is hard to know for sure what the facts are. The Tarot has been thought to come from places like India, Egypt, China and Morocco. Others say the Tarot was brought to us from the Sufis or the Jewish Cabbalists. Still others contend that the origin of the tarot was from Moses. In the library of Alexandria, in Egypt, there were scrolls that were based on the Book of Thoth, an ancient book that came from Egypts mystery schools. One theory is that the illustrations on the Tarot cards are secret teachings of the Book of Thoth hidden in the innocent pictures. Properly forged swords last a lifetime, or at least they should. Unfortunately, properly forged swords are few and far between these days. Sure, a knight could have found one during medieval times or a Samurai could have found one in his local village, but Joe Schmo in the USA of the twenty-first century will have to really search for a well forged sword if he wants one that will last. Thankfully our livelihood does not depend on these weapons of war any more. While stainless steel might work for forks, spoons, and butter knives, it does not work well for swords. Any sword made of stainless steel does not qualify as genuine because it just will not last. The forging and metallurgical processes that...

Medieval swords existed in several varieties for over a number of centuries. Both experimentation and specialization in design was constant. Some common features of the "generic" medieval swords as a wide, straight, long, double-edged blade with a simple cross-guard. Medieval knights typically used two types of swords - a heavy two-handed sword with a rounded end and a short sword with a pointed end. The common form of sword is a single hand one used for shearing cuts, hacking, and also for limited thrusting. Medieval swords can be assorted - usually by hilt design - into various categories by military historians, collectors, and curators. During the time, long bladed weapons were commonly known as...
